The Weight of an Anchor
It cant be fun to be told repeatedly that you are obsolete, dying, soon to be relegated to TVs Hall of Fame like such other once ubiquitous but now half-forgotten golden oldies as Kukla, Fran & Ollie. So pity, at least for a moment, the plight of three of the most widely known and highly paid stars in the vast American information firmament: the network news anchormen. Their nightly newscasts, which collectively commanded 84 percent of the viewing audience in 1981, now attract only 43 percent of the pie. Those Americans who do tune in, with a median age ranging from 56 (NBC) to 60 (CBS), are regarded as a step or two from the grave by the youth-centric standards of a medium that worships the 18-24 demographic. Whatever the news each night on NBCs Nightly News, CBSs Evening News and ABCs World News Tonight, the commercials on the three broadcasts amount to a grim virtual tour of a medicine cabinet largely for the aging, the infirm, the impotent and the incontinent: Plavix, Pepcid, Nexium, Ditropan, Caltrate, Viagra and Depends. The anchors themselves, all of whom have been on their thrones continuously since the early 1980s, may look preternaturally well preserved, but they are even closer to geezerdom than their typical viewer, with Dan Rather now 70, Peter Jennings 63 and Tom Brokaw 62. They must endure constant taunting by fellow journalists who make sport of anticipating their exit, a drumbeat that has become louder than ever in the aftermath of Disneys foiled effort this year to displace another fixture of anchordom, the 62-year-old Ted Koppel. This newspaper, like others, has written flatly of the coming disappearance of the evening news. The nations TV columns are jumpy with speculation that Jennings, whose contract is up for renewal, may have to take a salary cut (most unlikely), that Rathers new contract signals he will someday shift from anchoring to another CBS News role (possible, but far from imminent) and that Brokaw, now negotiating his NBC future, will formalize a transition to his zealous heir apparent, Brian Williams (maybe, but well-placed sources at the network say Brokaw will extend at least through the 2004 election). Whoever leaves when, the No. 1 cliché among media critics is that were watching the last hurrah of network news anchors as we have known them for nearly half a century. Or as Roger Ailes, the impresario of cables swashbuckling Fox News Channel, puts it somewhat less delicately about the anchor roles played by Tom, Peter and Dan, Theyre dinosaurs, and when theyre gone, its extinction.. Frank Rich article on diminished relevance of network news as anchors of three evening news programs -- Dan Rather at CBS, Peter Jennings at ABC and Tom Brokaw at NBC -- approach end of their careers and viewers drift to alternatives on cable and elsewhere; says network news was validated on Sept 11, when Americans returned to it for solid, unhysterical coverage; says form of evening broadcast is so powerful that it will likely survive turnover of anchors; photos (L)

A New Chief Of ABC News, With Arledge In the Shadows
David Westin believes that space sends a message. He plans to redesign the executive office floor at ABC News in New York -- raise the ceilings, broaden corridors, replace inner walls with windows. He believes in direct communication, too, and in forging a shared vision with his staff. Mr. Westin, who replaces Roone Arledge today as chief executive of ABC News, will need more than welcoming windows and modern management theories to reverse the declining fortunes of what used to be the undisputed leader of television news.. David Westin, who replaces Roone Arledge as chief executive of ABC News, will try to reverse declining fortunes of what used to be undisputed leader of television news; he must also fill shoes of man whom television experts describe as genius; Arledges grip on division has been so strong that its slippage in last few years is blamed partly on confusion about his future; Westin also faces same challenges that all broadcast news executives face: steadily dwindling audience and finding ways to make news programs compelling in age when overflow of information assaults potential viewers from all sides; Westin must also win confidence of staff members who are concerned that he lacks news background; his hiring of Shelby Coffey 3d has also raised concern because of Coffeys newspaper background and friendship with Michael Eisner, chairman of ABCs parent Walt Disney Co; photo (M)
