Human Services or Humanities and Social Sciences?

Ive been having doubts about my major. So, I went to the career center at my school to a career-personality test. My results said that Human Services or Humanities and Social Sciences would be a good fit for me.

I want to get a career where I am working with people and giving back to the community. I was considering working i the non-profit sector.

Unfortunately, I am still not clear about the different between the two. I already have a family, so it is important that I make a decent income. Can someone please help me out here.

Thanks!

Answer: Human services careers are about helping people. The humanities and social sciences can lead to such careers as well, but the path may be more difficult. You need to carefully read the course and degree descriptions to know exactly the tupe of training they will give you.

Forestry is an important and interesting subject of study. Forests form part of the vital natural resources of a country. From time immemorial forest resources have been a source of human sustenance. They are home to the most amazing herbs, medicinal compounds, natural cosmetics etc. Forestry and Wild Life go together since forests serve as home for wildlife.

Forest wealth also contributes significantly to the economy of the country. Specially trained personnel are therefore needed to maintain and regenerate the forest cover, forest wealth and resources. This involves the services of forestry specialists, forestry management experts and forest officers.

Forestry involves protection of forests and farming of trees to ensure contributing timber supply. Forester takes care of forest resources by protecting them from fire, pests, disease, encroachment and indiscriminate felling of trees

Liking for outdoors, spirit of adventure, good health, stamina and physical fitness, patience, scientific temperament, organizing ability, public relations skills, practicality, courage, decision-making ability, capacity to work long hours, a genuine interest in the preservation of the natural environment and habitat, inclination for research and academic bent of mind, curiosity, excellent skills of observation, interest in agriculture and geography.

Hope this information will serve your purpose. Go ahead with your plans with Forestry. Best Wishes.

Our center is a registered community based organization, that take care of the less fortunate children in the society. we are situated in a slum area. currently we are having an ac cute food shortage which has forced more than 100 children out of school because we are not able to feed them as before. our donor who used to support us withdrew from the pro gramme siting economic challenges.
kindly let us know if some body is willing to help.
Another category of the support needed is Teaching and learning resource materials, computers for school children to learn computer knowledge, school uniforms and playing equipments.
thanks

Answer: If someone in charge of the organization fund raising hasn't looked into applying for a grant from one of these foundations, then, I suggest she/he do that.

In no particular order of importance:

* Rockefeller Foundation Grants
The foundation provides grants to institutions and individuals seeking to improve the lives of poor people with a focus on the issues and region where the foundation works. The foundation works globally but provides the majority of its grants to organizations whose work is focused in Southern and Eastern Africa, Southeast Asia, and North America through programs that address agriculture, health, employment, housing, education, arts and culture, and global policy.
http://www.rockfound.org/grants/grants.shtml
Rockefeller Foundation
420 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10018-2729 United States

* ChevronTexaco Contributions Program
Chevron's primary interest is in programs that address critical issues where support can make a discernible difference. Grants target three capacity-building areas critical to economic development: providing for basic human needs--food, clean water, health, and safe shelter; supporting education and training--school-based (k-12) programs, work-based career/technical programs and training/professional development for educators; and services for entrepreneurs, business incubators, sector development support and micro credit programs.
Requirements
Grants are made to tax-exempt organizations worldwide in areas in which Chevron conducts business.

ChevronTexaco Corporation
6001 Bollinger Canyon Rd
San Ramon, CA 94583 United States

* William H. Gates Foundation Grants (Note: William H. Gates is Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft)
The foundation awards grants to support projects dealing with education and with global health and population issues, and to finance charities that operate primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Grants are awarded to shrink the gap that increasingly prevents poor people from being able to take advantage of crucial developments in science and technology. Unsolicited proposals are strongly discouraged, but the foundation sometimes follows up on short inquiries it receives through the mail, as long as the projects fit within the foundation's grantmaking guidelines.

Seattle, WA 98102 United States

* Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grants (he is the founder of Microsoft, Melinda Gates is his wife)
The foundation awards grants in its areas of interest, including increasing access to innovations in technology, education, libraries, and global health. Education grants are intended to provide teachers with opportunities to learn together the best ways to use technology to enhance student learning. Global health grants are awarded to improve the health of women and children, particularly in developing countries, by expanding services to enable women to safely carry and deliver babies and to prevent cervical cancer. Grants to libraries bridge the digital divide between those who have access to computers and the Internet and those who lack such access.

Jobs that assist with the military?

I would love a job that assists with the military. Something along the lines of helping soldiers with PTSD or something similar. I was wondering what I should major in at college that would best deal with this. I dont necessarily want to be a Psychiatrist, but more so working for a company that helps soldiers. Sorry if this is broad, Im not really sure how else to put it.

Answer: The military gets its psychological help from private physicians and from the Veteran's Administration medical personnel, and from physicians, psychologists and psychiatrists from both the military and civilian sectors who work on bases with medical facilities. If you want to help that's where those jobs are. There are always job openings at the VA; they have a rather high turnover rate.

A major in psychology or social work would be helpful in finding work like that. You can be a counselor, an evaluator, a clinician or a psychologist or psychiatrist--the latter two require a Bachelor's degree (usually in pre-med) and then medical school and internship; you will be licensed and certified in whatever specialty you want to go into. A degree in Social Work or Counseling will get you into counseling and outreach centers; a Bachelor's degree would be helpful, but a Masters will afford you more opportunity for better positions in more places.

You can also join the military--the Army or Navy specifically. These two have programs for becoming a medical professional built right into your military career--the Army will actually pay for you to attend Medical school if you qualify. The Navy has a Corpsman program that will train you in many aspects of the medical field--and if you become a Navy Corpsman, you can move right into the fields you described after your service is over. You could start by applying for the Reserve program in either service, and maybe go from there to Active Duty--it depends on where you are willing to relocate and how much you want to accomplish. Of course, this IS military service--and there are both risks and benefits to that. You could talk to recruiters about these programs. The Army has specific Medical Recruiting personnel who know the whole range of programs available.

As for private companies, I am not aware of any that are in the business of doing these things; that doesn't mean there aren't any, but I have worked for the military for 28 years now and have never heard of any. (I work in recruiting.)

Good luck with your career path. It's a field that is really wide open--there are lots of jobs available in certain areas. With the right training and education, you should have little problem finding employment.

CHAPTER 3: THE STUDENT; Forgive Us Our Student Debts

One thing that executives at even the most successful corporations struggle with is how to lure talented candidates into their organizations or professions -- how to incentivize a job, as an economist might put it -- so that an entry-level position has a chance to become a lasting career. The most direct method, of course, is to pay a dazzling - Jon Gertner article on student loan debt and programs run by National Institutes of Health, graduate schools, state governments and other organizations to use loan forgiveness to encourage teachers, lawyers, social workers and health professionals to work in underserved geographic areas or among needy populations; drawings (L) - Jon Gertner, a contributing writer for the magazine, often writes about business. - By Jon Gertner

What are the career prospects of Masters in Social work?

Answer: Job prospects- One can get employment as labour welfare officer, social worker, community organizer in private as well as public sector companies. One can also devote oneself with zeal to social work.

As this world of ours is becoming increasingly materialistic, devoid of human sentiments and emotions, with people growing more and more self-centred, yet another global trend is becoming distinctly
evident: many young people want to do something for society. There is a great satisfaction in doing something for others, which cannot be equalled or compensated by any remunerative job. Even those working in full-time jobs want to do some social work in their spare time. In the West, dissatisfaction with the rat race causes people to opt for jobs that help solve social problems and it is happening to some extent in India too, though mobility is smaller in this country.

It may be said that it is indeed a noble gesture to indulge in working for others or lend a helping hand to those who may not be as privileged as we are. The scope of social work is very wide. There is a dire need for people who can provide help to the disadvantaged members of the society. There are centres for rehabilitation for drug addicts, orphaned children and people with disabilities. Counselling, both educational and psychological, are required these days by a large section of the population. There are opportunities in health care, community policing, adoption, environmental protection, culture, and so on.

The social sector consists of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and institutions providing services to different sections of society. Many are engaged in research and publishing while others are active in solving problems at the grass root level. An idealistic youngster who wants to do something for the country may, thus, be attracted to the social sector. Fortunately, it is now more than an occupation of the idle and is getting highly professionalised. Several institutes offer degrees and diplomas in social work, after which permanent positions can be obtained in organisations. Salaries have been soaring, with generous infusion of funds from the government and foreign agencies.

Although there are no basic qualifications to get into the social sector, a Master in Social Welfare (MSW) degree, rural management or any masters' degree in social sciences will help., Degrees in environment and forestry management are also offered by various institutes. Apart from this, diplomas can be obtained in specific areas like those for the hearing impaired, physically handicapped an old age. Some organisations train volunteers themselves.

It is however, not necessary to have a formal MSW degree. If you are qualified in any field, you can do your bit. A lawyer, for instance, can provide free legal services to the under-privileged. A manager can provide marketing skills to a cooperative. Chartered accountants can act as professional fundraisers and provide services to organisations, which may be engaged in social work and may not have resources to hire their services. Many NGOs are engaged in publishing and they need journalists, graphic designers and desktop publishing experts. Teachers can join in by helping to educate poor children. Those who have some M.Phil and Ph.D. can find jobs in the social sector too, as much research is conducted by the NGOs. International funding agencies, notably from North America and Europe, have their offices in India and require professionals for their offices.

A job in the Development Sector has always been a blind spot as far as career consciousness is concerned. It is generally assumed that Social work is either a voluntary service area or a low compensation field. The proliferation of study programmes in social work in recent years, however, contradicts the above notion. A degree in social work opens the door to many lucrative career options in the –

Help with finding a Job ???????

Does anyone work anywhere that are now recruiting ?? I really need a job

Answer: One of the best ways to find help with seeking the right job for you is by visiting a career counselor on campus or at your city's workforce development center. He or she will ask questions about your career interests and why you're interested in a certain type of job, and the counselor may also give you a career assessment quiz to get a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses. When talking to the counselor, you should ask what the latest job market trends are in your city and how you can combine your skills and interests with current labor demands.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

1
Join a professional organization. For example, if you just graduated with a master's degree in social work, you can join your local branch of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and attend the branch's networking events. When you go to the events, bring copies of your resume with you so potential employers can know more about your work history. Also speak with fellow attendees because they may have some job leads that suit your interests and abilities.

2
Talk to your professors. If you're looking for a career in the non-profit sector and some of your professors work in this field, tell them your career goals and ask if they know of any job openings in your city with various non-profit organizations. For example, your sociology professor may tell you about a few paid job openings with specific local social service agencies and give you the website addresses where you can apply for those positions.

3
Read the latest edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook. In the book, you'll find detailed descriptions of all kinds of careers as well as the training needed for those careers, job outlook and average yearly earnings for people working in those industries. Visit your public or campus library to read the book and make copies since some libraries don't allow you to bring the book home.

4
Visit career websites such as Monster and Career Builder. These sites often have articles that profile specific careers and discuss what you need to do in order to prepare for them. You'll also find salary information as well as the market trends for certain jobs.

How to become a public interest lawyer?

I want to become a public interest lawyer, but Im not exactly sure how to do it. Ill be attending college next year and I plan on majoring in Philosophy and either double majoring or minoring in something else (any suggestions?). Then its off to law school. Thats where I get confused. Do you have specific majors in law school? How do you become a specific type of lawyer? Where would be the best place to become a public interest lawyer? Big cities, DC, suburbs? What will the salary be, I dont really care, I just want to be able to have enough money to survive and be comfortable. Thanks a lot for you help!

Answer: How to Become a Public Interest Lawyer

Education and Training

To become a Public Interest Lawyer, one must complete an undergraduate degree as well as a law degree from an accredited law school. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is a standardized test required for admission. Undergraduate majors can include anything, but often courses in English, history, political science, social work, and economics are useful. Many people take time off between completing their bachelor’s degree and attending law school, which can be a valuable time to gain work experience. Particularly for public interest law, prior work experience serving low-income people is helpful. Some applicants to law school interested in becoming a Public Interest Lawyer hold a master’s degree in social work or nonprofit management.

Additionally, because positions are so competitive, there are a number of one-year fellowships available after law school. Programs such as the Equal Justice Works Fellowship and the Skadden Fellowship Program offer recent graduates a one-year paid experience to provide legal services. These experiences are excellent preparation for a career as a Public Interest Lawyer and provide an edge in the hiring process. Bear in mind, however, that these fellowships are as competitive, if not more so, than full-time jobs.

There are several different settings in which Public Interest Lawyers may work. First, they may be employed by in legal aid or legal services clinics, which are generally government-funded. They provide direct service and representation in court matters to underrepresented clients. Second, they can work for nonprofit organizations where they are hired to lobby, advocate, protect constitutional rights or help low income people. Additionally, they can work directly for the government in such roles as prosecutors and public defenders. Finally, they can work for private law firms for designated full-time pro bono work. Many Public Interest Lawyers develop private practices representing clients in cases that they feel will help to bring about a more equitable and accessible justice system.

In public interest law centers and social action organizations, Public Interest Lawyers may research, lobby, organize and litigate. Rather than working with individual clients, they are more broad-based advocates who work on policy, reform, and class-action litigation. They are concerned with issues of human rights and social justice such as employment discrimination, fair housing, and education, to name a few.

Salaries

According to 2000-2004 salary information on the Web site http://www.PayScale.com, the median salary for Public Interest Lawyers in the United States is $53,000. A typical salary range shown on that same site is from $40,000 to $79,085. Jobs in the federal government tend to be at the high end of the spectrum compared with legal services and organization jobs.

As stated earlier, Public Interest Lawyers do not choose this field for the money, but for their commitment to social justice and helping others, like many others in the nonprofit sector. However, as one of the lowest-paying careers in the legal field, there are a number of grants and fellowships, as well as law school, employer, state, and federal loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs) to help offset student debt and encourage students to enter this profession.

Employment Prospects

Despite the long hours and low pay, positions in public interest law are very competitive. Since funding for such positions is scarce, there are more lawyers looking for public interest work than there are available jobs. It is rare for recent law school graduates to obtain these jobs unless they have significant internship experience; most candidates work for several years or complete fellowships first. The best Employment Prospects can be found working for the government.

Behind the Success Story, A Vulnerable Police Force

Murders in New York City have been cut by nearly two-thirds since their peak in 1990, and violent crime over all has fallen to levels not seen since the 1960s. Nonviolent crimes like auto theft have also shrunk by huge margins. Thousands of people who fled what they considered a dangerous and dirty city have been replaced by families who regard - First article in The Blues series examines the challenges and turmoil facing New York Police Department even as it basks in glow of its remarkable crime-fighting achievement of recent years; institutional problems include plummeting morale, retirement or resignation of many officers, including senior supervisors, the difficulty of recruiting new ones and the imminent loss of special tax funds and federal grants that helped underwrite expansion of the force in 1990s; some of problems can be seen as flip side of aggressive strategies that helped cut crime but that alienated some New Yorkers, both rich and poor; photos; graphs show decline in Police Academy applications, rising number of resignations and disciplinary actions among younger recruits and the low salaries of New York officers when compared with salaries elsewhere (L) - By KEVIN FLYNN
