When is a cat too old to have kittens?

Before anybody flames me!!! Im all alone, and my only companion is my beautiful little kitty. I love her so much and Im so close to her. I have no family. My kitty is seven years old and in good health. Im getting worried that I wont be able to go on after she passes away in a few years, and I thought it might be nice for her to have kittens, so a little part of her is still with me. Id love and take care of all of the kittens (and get them neutered). But Im worried that my cat is too old to give birth and it would hurt her or possibly kill her. While shes healthy, shes lived a very sheltered life and has never had a litter before.

Im also concerned because, so many kittens need homes and theyre getting euthanized, and I think it would be a good idea for me to adopt INSTEAD of letting my kitty have kittens. Im very torn because of this. Ive had a lot of cats, and while I loved them and I think they loved me back, Ive never been as close to any creature as I am to my girl. She really is like a daughter to me, so perhaps I would have that bond with her children as well.

Am I selfish? Is this wrong? Please advise me.

Answer: You are not selfish. But at her age she is pass the age of having a healthy litter of kittens. As a breeder of Maine Coon Cats, I do not let them breed after that age. It is time for them to enjoy life and have a good home to live in. The older they get the more problems there can be. I guess I would adopt a kitten. Go and check out the kittens sit in a room and see what one picks you. Make sure you have your old cats scent on you or a towel you have brought from home. See how they react to that. When you get home let the cat smell the towel and see how she reacts to their scent.

I can let you know her kittens may or may not behave like she does. Remember they will have a father and they could be like him. And she does not see the kittens as her children. After a certain age she will not see them at all as her kittens. Just as another cat.

How to give good care to an orphaned 4 week old kitten?

My fiance rescued a 4-week-old kitten from a group of teenagers who were really not able to give him any proper care, we didnt receive any information about his background but we really just didnt want him to become snake food.

When we first got him two nights ago, he was covered in flea dirt so we gave him a bath and picked out a majority of the fleas. He looks pretty healthy aside from the fleas. The first night we got him we fed him KMR formula but he seemed pretty interested in dry kitten food as well.

He slept in a crate his first night without crying at all, and uses the litter box every time, except we havent seen him poop yet which is a little concerning... a couple other things he does, he tries to suck on blankets and nibble my fingers a lot. I think this is because he is being weaned sooner than he should be.

I am also concerned that he is going to miss out on proper socialization he would get from his mother. I have an adult cat now and she is 2 and a half years old. So far she only seems interested in stealing his kitten food, and hisses at him when he gets too close. I was hoping over time there could be a motherly bond or something after she establishes herself as the "dominant cat".

He seems to like playing with the toys we got him but he hasnt been exploring as much as I expected.

So I guess what I am wondering the most about is how to make his transition here as EASY as possible, and some tips to make sure he isnt missing out on anything he would have gotten were he not orphaned. Also any advice on weaning and socialization would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Answer: When my 18 year old daughter brought home an emaciated 3.5 week old kitten found in her friend's neighbors backyard last year on Fathers Day so we let her dad name him. We brought him to the vet for an assessment, treatment and advice. We were advised to give him Royal Canin RS Wet Recovery food for feline use, watered down to a stewlike thickness, we were also advised to give him kitten formula. We provided this along with fresh water in shallow bowls.

After his meals we gently gave him tummy-rubs to help him digest his food. We also wiped his bottom with a warm wet washcloth to help stimulate him to eliminate his bodily waste. We kept him in a open box and cut a hole in one of the sides so he could enter/exit to get to and from his shallow litter box which we would put him in every couple of hours so he would get the hang of using it. We used non clumping kitty litter, clumping litter can be deadly if ingested. In his box, he had warm bedding with several small stuffed animals in similar size to him so he would feel safe. The toys replaced his mommy and littermates. We wanted him to feel emotionally secure and not afraid which would stress him out.

We brought him to the veterinarian for several rounds of deworming treatment and brought in a fresh stool sample to ensure the parasites in his tiny little body were non-existent. He was also vaccinated and once he reached the 5 month mark, we had him neutered. He is now a healthy 9 month old kitten.

When he was about 6 weeks old, we introduced him to our resident male neutered cat, Tinkerbell. We followed expert guidelines to ensure the fur wouldn't fly. We didn't want any injuries to occur as we didn't know how Tinkerbell who was just over a year old would react. Tinkerbell had a hissy-fit at first, but with time and reassurance that the kitten was of no threat he began to act as a big brother teaching him kitty ettiquette. Thanks to Tinkerbell, Baby Diablo is now a healthy well adjusted kitten.

NOTE: Ensure you use cat shampoo and keep your kitten warm to avoid hypothermia. Warning, fleas can kill a kitten so ensure you seek the advice from your local veterinarian to rid your kitten of fleas and other parasites. Keep your kitten away from your resident cat so she doesn't catch anything such as worms and fleas from your kitten. The kitten needs a clean bill of health prior to introduction. A bloated tummy is a sign/symptom that the kitten has worms.

Here's an informative link on how to care for your kitten which includes caring for a kitten that is suffering from a flea infestation...

Anyone ever heard of a cat "adopting" human children?

About 3 months ago, we agreed to foster a litter of three kittens. We soon adopted out two of the kittens and started to notice something strange about the remaining kitten. He absolutely loves our two children, ages 2 years and 6 months. No matter how loud they play or cry, he never leaves the room. He is especially attached to my daughter (2). He follows her everywhere, plays with her, sleeps with her. He lets her pick him up and carry him all over the house. If he looses sight of her, he cries until she lets him know where she is. If she falls or hurts herself, he comes and finds either me or her father. He even comes with us to the store because he cries when she leaves. He has never scratched or hissed at either of the kids. However, if we go into our daughters room in the middle of the night to tuck her in, he swats at us for disturbing her.
I dont think I have ever seen a bond so strong between and animal and a human; let alone a child. Im actually starting to wander if he is a reincarnated family member because of his behavior. It really is spooky to watch how he shadows her.
My concern is, with him being so protective, could his possessiveness eventually turn into aggression towards other people? He shows no sign of aggression now (except for swatting at us for disturbing her at night, and even then he does not extend his claws) and is very loving towards everyone in the house. He is only 5 months old and Im not sure how this behavior will be when he is fully grown.

Answer: Aww, I had a cat like that when I was little. I could lie down and pretend to cry and he would get all worried and pace circles around me. He also attacked the neighbor's chow when it wandered into our yard while I was outside.

It's not uncommon for a cat to form a very strong bond with one person. I don't think your kitty will become aggressive toward other people. Cats don't have the dog pack mentality, so it's more likely he just really loves your daughter. He might be territorial about her bed, which is why he swats. I have a Maine coon that is extremely protective of a footstool in our living room. He sits on it all the time, and he'll sit on me when I sit on it... but anyone else who tries to touch it while he's sitting on it will be swatted. Try to make sure the rest of the family pays a lot attention to the cat, and that you invite him to be nearby when you're spending time with your daughter.

Would you read this book?

So I write a lot and here is a book(series I have been writing on for a long time) heres what there called, in order.
Finding Gracie
Helping Gracie
Healing Gracie
Remembering Gracie
Heres a summary of each one, and pretend for each one you havent read the next one

Finding Gracie
Carmen Dallas loves animals and camping. Well imagine at a campground her and her two best friends find a litter of three kittens and a Mama under the shed. All the kittens seem to find homes except for a little gray one, which Carmen loves dearly. Her parents hate animals though, especially finicky cats. Carmen and this kitten spend the whole summer together, and Carmens father accepts this kitten as a member of their family. But her mother is still disgusted, and Mama always has the last word. They cant find this kitten a home, and Carmen does not want her to end up at the shelter. Who helps this poor little gal? A better question should be, does she get help?

Helping Gracie
Gracie has adjusted to the Dallas life, even though one family member still hasnt accepted her. While going to the campground, the place where she was saved, something crazy happens. The Dallas family is preparing for kittens. Gracie gives birth to two beautiful girls. One of the kittens even has a white patch shaped like a heart over her chest. When the family returns home with Gracie and her daughters, a little mishap happens and the kittens get out. Its been a week and there stilll not found. Everyone fears they are dead, but Carmen knows deep down inside her that they have to be okay. But the kittens were only six weeks old. Will they be found, alive?

Healing Gracie
After the pain of losing two beloved pets, Carmen cant feel that anything couldnt possibly get any worse. That is until Gracie is hit by a car, leaving her broken and bruised. The vet fears she wont make it, but Carmen knows Gracie is a fighter. But does she have the will to survive?

Remembering Gracie
Carmen and Gracie spend many happy years together, growing up and bonding. But Gracie is getting old, and becoming sick. Only time will tell? When the legend of Gracie seems lost, Carmen finds the message from god she is seeking. While visiting the campground that started it all, she spots a cat under the shed, one firmiliar cat, one cat with a heart on hers.

Read the summarys as if you dont know what happens next. Constructive critiscm only! If you dont like it please tell me why? Tell me if you like it, and if you would read this series. Thanks!

Answer: No, I would not. Realize though that you have posted this in the CAT section and most of the regulars here are adults. It sound like your proposed series would appeal to those in the 12 - 15 age group.

I am a middle-aged woman and my recreational reading consists of popular Science and History: Jared Diamond ("Guns, Germs, and Steel"!), Stephen Hawking, Raymond Kurzweil etc and good fiction, especially the detective genre. Current fave detective fiction writer is Ake Edwardson.

I just picked up "The Tin Ticket" by Deborah Swiss. It is the stories of girl convicts involuntarily transported to Australia during the 19th century.

I suggest that you try asking this again in one of the writing sections and the Adolescent section, You will get more opinions from teens in those.

My guess is that younger readers, especially girls, would be interested in those story lines and that you would have a decent prospective audience among that set.

Good luck.

My new foster kitten? Just want to share?

OK... So just a little update I wanted to share with Y!A...

Im officially adopting Dottie, the sweet 10 weeks old kitten! I found her on Petfinder.com, which was the main site where I adopted my other four cats. Dottie, her mother and her nine brothers were found hidden under a car.

After a few weeks of anxiety, I finnaly made my finally decision: Dottie has a home!

Which is great, because she was shy from being euthnaised (not much more time in the foster home).

Heres just a photo for you to have an idea: http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt134/illfollowthesun/2920572612_cb7110be82_b.jpg

Now, this aint really a question, so Ill put up a legit... Where did you get your cats from?

Oh and Pretty Kitty... If looks could kill... :)
Oops! I posted the same pic twice! Sorry guys...

Answer: Oh! Dottie is just a darling :D So pretty! And Pretty Kitty's new little one is beautiful too :) I feel like rambling, so I'll answer your 'legit' question too xD

I got Archie as a stray kitten nine years ago when I was 11. His mother was a stray, and she kept on having kittens, near where we lived. When my mother found out, she knew something had to be done. We brought the kittens to our shed and contacted the RSPCA. For some reason, they couldn't do anything (:S) apart from give us some contacts. Mum took the mother to be spayed as soon as she was able to be, as well as taking the kittens to a charity that gives them shots, and spays and neuters them when the time comes. My mother made a donation for this. During all this, I had grown attatched to the tiniest kitten, pure black and not a spot of white. Mum had to let me keep him, of course :P Now, Archie isn't so tiny. He's huge!

Willow I bought from a good breeder I know. I wasn't exactly planning on buying the kitten when I saw the photo of the recent litter.. but I went to visit.. and that was it. Love at first meeting. Willow and I just kind of clicked. I had to have her.. so I asked my breeder friend whether I could buy Willow, and whether she had been reserved. Willow was free, so I got her. It was kind of impulsive and chaotic but definitely the right decision. Willow and I have grown so close - and while I love all my cats just the same, I never thought a bond could exist between owner and cat like it does between me and Willow. I never considered that I'd buy a pedigree (Willow is a Birman, great line.. she was expensive xD) but it wasn't that she was a pedigree.. her little personality was just.. argh! xD I just loved her so much after meeting her. She's so NAUGHTY.

But I havn't done my best by Willow. I could have killed her... and if not, I could have lost her.. and that's where Molly comes in. I'll get thumbs down for this, and I'd deserve them.. but I can admit my wrong doings and mistakes... and do it with a heavy heart and my head hanged >_<

Molly is Willows daughter. I was too late getting Willow spayed. Willow escaped one day, for one hour.. and got pregnant. It just shows that an hour is all it takes. She was too small, and too young to carry a litter. I was 16 at the time, and even then I knew the massive danger I had put Willow in by being too late getting her fixed, and my mother felt the same. We were so mad at ourselves. For some reason that I can't remember now (my mother ended up 'handling' it solely because I knew it was likely I'd lose Willow.. she'd either die because she was too small, or if that didn't happen.. the breeder would take her away from me.. at 16, I was distraught.) the vet said he couldn't perform the spay while she was pregnant.. So we let her have the litter, and got her fixed as soon as we could.

I am very lucky Willow didn't die, and lucky that the breeder trusted me enough still to let me keep Willow. The breeder was very, very, VERY upset with me and my mother.. I don't know why she let me keep Willow. I'm glad she did. I think it was solely because she knew how much I loved Willow.. she was extremely forgiving... eurgh. I wouldnt have let me keep Willow, if I were her. I had signed a contract saying I'd get her fixed as soon as I got her home (the breeder normally does it herself, but since it was such a quick decision, and the breeder trusted us to do it.... :( ). Yeah.. I was sure I would have Willow taken away from me. To this day Im not sure why I didn't... there was no comeback for my mistake, apart from the extreme guilt. Maybe the breeder new the guilt was enough? I don't know..

Even though I love Molly so so much, and her brother and sister got good homes (one going to my father, the other to an elderly lady who had lost her old cat a few months before) I do regret it. It was a string of mistakes on mine and my mothers part. Slacking with our pet care. Molly is a perfect little angel, and of course I'm glad I have her.. but.. eh. It's not a mistake I'll be making again. I am so humbled by how well Willow coped. She's a star for putting up with my mistakes. And it's something I'd encourage others to NOT let happen, too.

There are too many kittens in the world, and mistakes like this can't happen.

But yes, thats where I got my cats. I love them all endlessly. Archie is the most loving boy ever, Willow is.. my best friend in the whole word. Period. Molly is the cutest little darling.

We got Tibbins as a stray when I was 3, she passed away in March this year, estimated age 22 - 25 by the vet that had to put her down :) She's missed, but she had a great life and was an AWESOME cat. I'm glad she can rest now.. she was so tired towards the end.

Most people, when asked to describe Luke Hamilton, would say, “Who?” accompanied by a quizzical look. This was an apt summary of Luke’s life. He was a man of medium height with a somewhat bulging gut and a receding hairline; he could easily be the person sitting next to you on the subway, or the man behind you at the grocery store. In his drab grey over coat and slightly crumpled trousers, he blended into the background. Yes, Luke Hamilton was average in nearly every way. Of course, an average Joe wouldn’t be driving down the highway in a rental car with the body of a prominent banker’s daughter in wedged in the trunk.

He hadn’t meant to kill her, really. Only kidnap her; she was an only child doted on by her father. Good old dad was a very important investment banker who held the county’s money in the palm of his successful hand. He was an intimidating man used to getting his way, but Luke knew with his precious daughter gone he would cave to any amount of ransom.
Through his careful observations and research, he noted that the wife, an elitist who gave herself illusions of humanity by volunteering to serve on charity committees, maintained a cold and detached relationship with the girl. With her father, it was just the opposite.

There was a special bond between father and daughter. Luke, with a pang of self-sympathy for the childhood he never had, watched as the pair played tennis, swam, and jogged in each other’s company. Luke thought it strange that the girl seemed to enjoy spending time with her father. She was almost 17, and had her own car (a sleek little convertible—top of the line, naturally) but yet Luke had hardly ever seen her go places with other kids her age. It seemed indeed that her father was her best, if her only friend. Luke smiled inwardly to himself. He had made a perfect selection. Naturally daddy would be frantic when his little angel disappeared into thin air. Luke knew he would pay any sum of money to get her back.

Well the ransom idea was shot now. Back to square one, Luke thought pensively as he maneuvered the car under an overpass. It was still dark out, 2am, so there was no one was around, other than a wino so drunk Luke thought it unlikely he would ever regain consciousness. Even if there were witnesses, no one would think it odd to see him pull a large trash bag out of his trunk. Though there were signs everywhere proclaiming “NO LITTERING” in large letters, the overpass was an unofficial waste dump.

He lifted the bag containing the girl’s body, and began to grunt with effort. Under her deceptively slimming clothes, she didn’t appear to weigh much more than a feather. He knew those skinny jeans were hiding something. He hefted the bag out of the trunk and dropped it at his feet. As he slammed the rusty trunk shut, he realized he was perspiring. Next time, he made an internal promise to himself, the hostage will be smaller. This revelation momentarily startled him. He had been toying with the idea of another kidnapping all night, and his subconscious had made up his mind. There would be a next time.

Answer: Wow, that's pretty impressive. :) You have just the right amount of detail that allows us to form a satisfying mental picture, There were only a few places where the punctuation was missing, or a different one could have been used, but overall it was a very pleasing read.

Is Luke going to be the main character? I'm not sure I'd like that, but it'd be interesting to write a book where the main character is a hated criminal. Intriguing, to be sure.

There's not much criticism on this one, since it's already pretty well done. Great job, and I hope you keep writing it! :)

Question for Catholics that DONT go to church?

With the extra hour we get in our lives from not wasting our time what do you accomplish in the hour you would of been at church? I usually spend that hour doing yard work before football starts.

What do you guys do with the extra time?

Answer: I grew up in a Roman Catholic church, but from the age of 10, flat out refused to attend church except Christmas and Easter (to appease my mother I attended those two days)...Extra hour? I got a whole extra DAY around the house. My father was a non-practicing Christian...he prayed at home, and was definitely Christian, but didn't feel it necessary to attend church.

While my mother and siblings went to church, my father and I would have our father-daughter bonding time. We would go hunting, fishing, play board games, watch John Wayne movies (his favourites), do woodworking, or something else that he and I shared just the two of us (once we spent the day at the beach cleaning up litter; another day we spent it building a wheelchair ramp for someone who was too poor to afford one).

Because of our Sundays together, I feel my father and I had a very special bond, and when he died when I was 16, I really felt that it was okay...because I had known my father like no one else in the family had.

MY GUINEA PIG JUST HAD A BABY AND I NEVER EVEN KNEW SHE WAS PREGNANT?!!!!!!?

I bought 2 guinea pigs 7 weeks ago when they were both 3 weeks old from this person who bred guinea pigs and they were both supposed to be females and sisters. Well..... Just today when they are now 10-11 weeks old I was cleaning their cage (I have a C&C cage) and by the way I have an opening I cut in the cage so they could sort of see out of it and I saw something white but I thought it was just mind playing tricks on me also one of my guinea pigs was really jumpy loud and jumpy. So I kept cleaning out the cage and then I put then back in the cage and I looked again and I was sure I saw something white and I looked and I thought it was a mouse but I looked again and it was a baby guinea pig and it had climbed out through the opening when I was cleaning the cage and then climbed back in after I got done. Also there is only one guinea pigs and it looks like its 1 day old and today was thee first day I had noticed my guinea pigs behavior so right now all of my guinea pigs are getting along plus the dad. And tomorrow were taking all of them to the vet and getting the dasd neutered but I cant separate the dad tonight bc we dont have a cage so first thing tomorrow thats what were doing. So my questions are can my guinea pig have another baby a couple hours after she has her first? 2. Is it possible she could only have 1 baby? Or any other advice you have would be nice. Sorry its so long. Thankyou.

Answer: Ok, I am answering this with years of experience behind me, I don't have a big ego, but from some of the answers you are getting, you will be confused and won't know who to listen to. I am letting you know from first hand experience(not ''a friend of a friend whose sister's daughter'' or copied and pasted from the internet).

1. No, she won't have any more babies. It is *possible* you may find a dead one when you are cleaning, but this could be due to numerous reasons(too many to type out, irelevant to your other questions unless you do happen to find one), but no, if the bub is as old as a day, than your mother sow will only have the one baby.

2. It is completely normal, and quite common for, guinea pigs to have just the one baby. I have had several sows have just the one baby, and each one we have kept. Plenty of other people have had the exact same thing happen, only to hear that it is far from rare.

The problem with keeping mum and dad together is that mum may already be pregnant again. As soon as the sow has given birth, she will come into season again, meaning that she is ready to be mated again, but as to whether or not she will allow him to mount her is another point altogether.

There is *NO* danger to the bub from mum getting pregnant again(she will *NOT* reject her baby just because she is pregnant again, she herself would not yet know this, nor will it *stop her milk from coming*, her milk is already there, just needs the bub to suckle), or from dad eating it(guinea pigs *ARE NOT* cannibals. They WILL NEVER eat their babies, both mother or father *DO NOT* purposefully harm their young(though they can accidently squish the bub whilst trying to get away from/trying to mate).

The danger *IS* back to back breeding. A sow should be given at least 6 months in between litters, one litter a year is best. B2B breeding is cruel, plain and simple. Her body needs time to go back to normal and recouperate. Not giving her a rest *will* shorten her life span.

Congrats! You will have to gender the baby before it turns 3 weeks old, as if it is a boar, it will mate with mum. If it is a sow, it will breed with dad at 4 weeks of age. A baby girl's(sow) genitals look like a Y (the V part being her vagina, the I part being her anus), when opened gently, it will open wide, with no little buldge at the top. A baby boy's(boar) genitals will look like an i (the . being the penis, the I being the anus), when gently opened, it won't open so much, and there will be a tiny buldge at the top. Compare to mum and dad, whichever it looks like, it is!

You won't notice a testicle sack at this early age, as it has yet to develope, and is located behind the penis, anyways.

Best of luck! Cherish the moments, they do grow up quickly! Btw, baby guinea pigs will be eating solids just hours after they are born, their ears and eyes are already open at birth, and they have the coat they will have for their lifetime from birth, too. Babies really only *need* their mother's milk for the first week of their lives, and can be weaned at 3 weeks old.

Hope all of this helps!

P.S You can hold the little one now if you so choose. Mum WILL NOT reject it, as guinea pigs DO NOT do this unlike some other rodents. Just remember not to hold it for too long(over 15 minutes) as mum and bub will want to bond!

Answer: For the most part, that was very well done! Extremely descriptive and planned out.

That being said, I think you should realize that your writing in general sounds a little amateurish. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but though your story had a nice plot and a fair ring, I don't know how long I would stay interested in it. Two, maybe three more pages? And then I would probably set it down. It just doesn't click with me. I don't know, but I don't think it's because your story is uninteresting, but just that your style is. Don't get me wrong, I liked the quirkiness and the little details...I just don't think I'd be able to go through with it for long. Unless this is just going to be a short story, I suggest you make everything a little more dramatic; that whole paragraph (well, I know it was like 5 paragraphs haha) was all TELLING, not showing, the banker's daughter's life. So there, you need more description.

And another thing, I really dislike your first line. I'm sorry, but your hook just doesn't hook me. It's not particularly cliche, but it's just really awkwardly worded, as if you were forced to write the line. Instead, I would edit it along the lines of: "If you were to have a conversation during your afternoon tea, and if you were to mention Luke Hamilton's name, all your other acquaintances would say, “Who's Duke Halemton?”, accompanied by perplexed looks. {Insert something else here...I feel like that's too little} This, to say in short, was basically the summary of Luke’s life."
You know what I mean? The words "describe Luke Hamilton" just seem so unnatural..and "apt summary" just doesn't seem to fit in with this; it's irrelevant.

All in all, I like your story! It's a great plot, and I can tell you're getting somewhere.
Good luck! ♥

Can I breed a sister&brother rabbit together?

I am going to get two holland rabbits they will most likely be from the same litter. Would the results of them having offspring be bad if the purpose of the offspring was to be a pet rabbit? What would the situation be if it was like a step sister and a normal brother? and if it was just like regular siblings what if they had completely different traits? Like could the offspring be ok for a pet rabbit if the better trait was the dominant trait and the recessive was the bad? I really would just like to be able to keep my bunnies in one cage. YES I have multiple cages I am not being greedy to not buy more cages because we have at least 7 cages. I am NOT an irresponsible pet owner ALL of my pets have lived at least 5 years longer than the average life expectancy. I am NOT getting two males because they will fight til death over the territory of the cage. I dont want two females because they are hormonal and I heard that normally males tend to be sweeter. I really would like to get a girl and a boy because I love genetics if they were to have babies. My dad thinks it would be a great learning experience so please dont lecture to me about how I am an irresponsible owner or should get rabbits from a shelter because i tried that and just nvm it was a bad experience with them. I am getting the holland lops from a feed store and I talked with the bunny expert there and they said that the bunnies came from a good breeder and that they are purebreds. Thank you !
EW ! WHY WOULD I MAKE A VIDEO U PERV!!!!!
I would like a mature, rabbit breeder or expert to just answer my questions please, it is not just about the brother and sister.... what about half sister and brother? Please I dont want to be yelled at I just want the answers to all of my questions please no more would you breed with your brother just please answer the questions I love rabbits and wouldnt want to hurt them. Please be mature and dont leave rude answers. I will be 100% fine if people will just answer the entire paragraph i wrote under my question. please
COULD SOMEONE PLEASE JUST ANSWER EVERYTHING IN THE PARAGRAPH??? =( please

Answer: First off yes you can breed brother and sister. However unless they are both fantastic and meet the breed standard you will not only be doubling the chance of the good traits but the bad traits as well. As siblings they are going to have the same traits and dominance and recessive traits really have nothing to do with it.

Inbreeding does not cause genetic defects but what it does is bring out genetic issues that already exist. We breed siblings and some of our best show rabbits have been from siblings and half siblings. However if genetic defects arise these animals are never used again. You are better off doing line breeding such as father to daughter and mother to son. The whole idea of breeding rabbits is to improve the breed standard. If you have two siblings that do have faults you are only going to get more faults.

The absolute only reason to breed rabbits is to try to improve the breed standard or if you intend to use them as a food source. If you are interested in learning about rabbits and raising them I suggest that you join the American Rabbit Breeders Association and even attend some local ARBA shows to speak with other breeders. There is no reason to breed pet rabbits because the responsible breeders who exhibit their animals have plenty of animals that can not compete and these are great pets.

It would not be wise to keep unaltered and unbonded rabbits in the same cage. When the babies are born the mother can become pregnant again immediately. In fact they are most receptive right after delivery. This would turn your doe into a baby making machine and significantly reduce her life span, not to mention that rabbits shouldn't be weaned until 8 weeks so she would be raising 2 litters at once. The buck could kil the babies. The mom may feel threatened by the presence of the buck and kill them herself.

There is no market for non pedigreed rabbits. We have very high quality show rabbits and we are lucky to get $20 for their off spring. For the $5 you may be able to get for pet quality rabbits you will be losing huge amounts of money to raise even one liitter. Does with litters should be free fed. Meaning that you are going to be going through about 150 pounds of feed per month.

Does that are litter mates can often be successfully bonded even after maturity. Bucks will indeed fight when they reach sexually maturity.

If you want a bonded pair of rabbits your best bet would be to get the buck neutered and bond them properly. It is not extremely expensve to get a buck neutered. Does are a bit more expensive but it can save them from an untimely death due to uterine cancer.

I do wonder how your animals have lived 5 years longer than average. A rabbit that is properly cared for can live well into thier teens.

If you have found a responsible breeder I would be asking them their opinions. A responsible breeder will answer your questions for you.

Is too late for my guinea pigs to love me?

Last year, I got two guinea pigs, a girl of three months and another girl of 1.5 months according to PetCo. A girl and a boy in reality though. And this past 8 months, there have been lots of issues with a couple of litters and separating different genders and all that horrible stressful stuff, and I was even gone on vacation with my dad watching them for 2 months. Its really not fair to them to have to go through all of that, I havent really spared any attention to loving them really or bonding with them. Its just been too much. And to be honest, theyre all quite unhealthy, and pretty chunky as well.
But now Ive handled it so that I have mother and daughter in one cage, and the father in another cage. Ill be having him neutered this week so he can rejoin his wife and daughter. Ill be getting them ready for living with each other by bathing them, and slowly introducing them together, (I wont let any sex happen) over the next couple of weeks while hes recovering from his neuter and the sperm cells are dyeing off. The mother is quite brave, shell let me pet her, and pick her up if shes not feeling pissy, and shell eat from my hand and everything. But the father and daughter will run away like I have a fork and knife in my hand and Im wearing a bib whenever I see them.
I was just wondering if, in the event that I took them out for AT LEAST one hour every day for tones of love, play, fruits, veggies and exercise, that they could love me just as if I had taken care of them properly from the start.
Please dont lecture me on taking care of my guinea pigs. I know I always should have, but thats not what I came here for. And its not as if I abuse them. Just not quite the care I could have taken.

Answer: This is a time the good old towel trick will really be of help. With 3 just hold each one as much each day as you possibly can but you will be surprised at how much time you actually have in your day that you can share with your guinea pigs.Go to my You Tube site and view the Towel Trick.

http://www.youtube.com/user/GuineaPigPersonals

Wrap your guinea pig in a towel and lie it on your chest (the sound of your heart is comforting to it) while you are watching TV, reading a book or listening to music, guinea pigs love music. Set it in your lap while you are on the computer, my Miya loves the sound of the keyboard and purrs to it!! Carry the guinea pig about the house as you do your day, guinea pig adore doing your day with you. Speak softly to it and pet the towel thus you are petting it through the towel.

After about 2 weeks of doing this for as much time as you can your guinea pigs should be calming down and be happy to see you come into the room. they will not be as afraid of you as they were, the more time you give them the better the results will be. The reason this works is it mimics their need to burrow in the tall grasses in the wild so they fell safe in the towel. This was just a small list of things you do on a daily basis that you and your guinea pigs can do together giving them all the attention they need but you are not taking of any extra time to give it to them.

The best of luck to you, i have the greats respect for you for wanting to do what is the right thing to do for your guinea pigs, after all they are not just throw away pets, they have feelings and loads of love for you , it is just setting in there waiting for you to receive it!!

The father will have to be kept away form mom and daughter for 6 weeks after his surgery as he can still get them pregnant through that time. I told my daughter the same thing when she had her dog neutered and she thought i was a bit touched, the end result was a litter of unwanted pups that i got to hand raise as the mom dog refused to feed them.

For those of you who love your cats?

Im stuck in a situation where I have 5 grown cats, and 4 kittens that are almost two months old. the reason I have them is because we rescued a cat during the winter, she was pregnant and had a litter of 5, we kept her and her 5 kittens..so we had 6 cats in all during that time. I began to bond a lot with one of the kittens..I loved her very much, and I was heart broken when she had to be put to sleep at 6 months of age, she got sick and I took her to the vet but not much could be done, and I was advised to put her to sleep, it has been one of the most sad days of my life. since then, I have been thinking that maybe my cats are sad, miserable,.and maybe I should find them new homes each, my father never bothered to spay the mother cat so she had another litter of 4 and so that makes 9 cats now. I tried to explain to him that if he was going to keep her he needed to spay her, he didnt listen and now we have a lot of cats. the reason we kept all cats is because my sister who is 15 is spoiled and wanted to keep them all, she fights constantly with my parents to let the cats stat at our home. I have been looking at the situation from different angles, and since my kitten died( I had taken care of her individually from the others) I have come to realize that these cats must go, my father is irresponsible and he will not pay for any of their vet bills in case they get sick, one of these kittens did get sick and I had to pay the vet!! I am fine with helping out but I cant always pay for all the vet bills,..I am thinking that I will keep this new kitten, and I was thinking I call a no kill shelter that are known to help pet owners who can no longer afford a pet to find new homes for the animals..I want to do this because I see that the cats arent happy at all here. sometimes my mother locks them up in the basement because they bother her by jumping on the dinning room table or they poop on the carpet..my father gets really angry whenever he has spend. I need advice..

Answer: Well, you are in a mess.

There is not going to be any fast solution because no-kill shelters are very often full to capacity. Some will let you put your cats on a vacancy waiting list so when you do find no-kill shelters to call ask about this if they are full. Then get each cat or kitten on each shelter's list (that has one).

Surely your parents must realize that it cost less money to spay a cat than to feed a ll of the kittens that result from her not being spayed. Most communities have at least one low-cost spay and neuter program. You are going to have to get started on this while you try to find shelters for the others.

You need to get started getting them spayed or neutered because by the time you get all of those cats placed into shelters they will have become sexually mature and will all start breeding. then you will have 15 or 20 MORE. Yes, mother or father/daughter or son and brother and sister will and do mate.

It'll be a much bigger mess if you don't start getting them fixed right now while you try to find shelter space for them.

Since you don't say where you live, I'll leave the Googling to you. Put this in the search "low cost spay neuter cats" plus the name of your town, city, or county. Check out every hit that comes up.
You may come across some programs that require income verification so your parents will need to be in on this.
If they refuse to pay even the minimal amounts for low-cost surgery then you will need to pay yourself. Tell your parents to take it out of your spending money to come up with the money or get a parttime job.

The amount it costs to spay or neuter a cat varies greatly depending on your area. A private vet clinic might charge from $100.00 - $300.00 but there are special programs through which you might get them done for $50.00 each. And even if you can only get one done at a time that will be a big start on curbing this problem - which is about to become a much more serious one.

If you are old enough to recognize this problem and be writing here asking for help you are old enough to assume some of the responsibility yourself. Even though it is not your fault taking care of a situation such as this on your own is the mature thing to do.

You can begin to search for no-kill shelters by Googling "no-kill shelter cats" with the name of your town, city or county. You can also try "cat rescue" with your town etc. This site can get you started with finding shelters http://www.petfinder.com/index.html. Click on "shelters" on the purple bar.

So remember, you need to start both actions immediately: getting at least some of them fixed while trying your best to get them placed into shelters.

Good luck with this.

Should I get a cat before or after?

So I am currently catless, petless, I had to leave my childhood cat home with my father because she just isn’t very nice to people she doesn’t know, scratching, hissing, attacking heals, and that wouldn’t have been good for the baby... besides my father enjoys having the cat around, since she was raised around us she was very pleasant. The thing is I don’t know if I should buy a new cat before my daughter is born so she has a buddy to grow up with or wait till she is about 3 or 4 and let her go to the pet store, a breeder, or pound and let her pick out her own cat, on her own?

Answer: I would definitely wait to get a new pet with a little on the way! Your new pet will have to adjust to life in a new place and then you will be bringing home another "pet" into your home that will take so much of your time. It will be a hard adjusting time for the cat and you may not get the bonding experience with the cat that is necessary. Once you are settled in with the new baby, go to a humane society and choose a gentle loving cat that responds to your baby with affection (take your baby along). Good Luck!!!!

To proud mama of 3: thank you for mentioning toxoplasmosis!!! I totally forgot about that. If you do get a cat avoid the litter box at all costs! If you do have to clean it out wear a mask, wash your hands with hot water and keep the littler box extra clean. The disease is most harmful during the first trismester of pregnancy. It is not harmful to the cats. They get it from eating birds, mice, etc....and is a parasite in their feces. Most people that have had cats have already had the disease and won't get it again. But it is better safe than sorry!! Cats are wonderful pets. MIne just love their new playmate!!!!

What is UR opinion on this story Child Believed to Have Been in Hot Car for Hours what will happen next?

BROWNSVILLE - Police say a 4-year-old girl who died after being left in a hot car was possibly there for hours.

According to officers, Felicitas Alexandria Cordova and her family were at the Brownsville Flea Market off Expressway 77 to sell merchandise yesterday. The girls mother, 37-year-old Olga Salazar, told police she realized the 4-year-old was missing.

Were told the toddler was found unconscious in the familys SUV. Investigators say the girl was sitting in temperatures over 104 degrees.

"In these South Texas heats we have in the summertime, anywhere in general, temperatures will soar with the windows down. And in this case, with the windows rolled up, it was tragic," says Lieutenant Orlando Rodriguez of the Brownsville Police Department.

The 4-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Her mother was charged with endangering a child by abandonment.

Police say Salazar is an illegal immigrant and will be turned over to Border Patrol if she posts bond. The Mexican consulate and Child Protective Services were notified of the childs death.

snarky where do you see any Americans in this story ?
Adryana... your story has nothing to with a child left in car-nice try though

Answer: that's a very sad story,
and i think is pathetic that you are trying to use something like this to bash Hispanics so what if she was illegal, anyone could do something like this.

so what's your opinion in this-
Scott and Molly McCurry must serve at least 17 years in prison before they will be eligible for parole after a Spartanburg County jury convicted them Thursday afternoon of starving and abusing three young boys in their custody.

Scott McCurry Circuit Court Judge Derham Cole sentenced the couple, who are now divorced, to the maximum prison sentence on each of the six charges against them, 20 years in prison for inflicting great bodily harm on a child (three counts) and 10 years in prison for unlawful conduct toward a child (three counts). The sentences, however, will run concurrently, so the McCurrys will be eligible for parole after serving 85 percent of the maximum sentence of 20 years.

Assistant Solicitor Susan Reese, who prosecutes child abuse and neglect cases, said that in terms of physical abuse, it was one of the worst cases she has seen.

"It was such a prolonged period of abuse, not just one instance; it was every day," she said after the sentencing.

Police removed the children, then ages 5, 7 and 8, from the McCurry home on July 13, 2006, after a neighbor told officers the boys seemed frail and malnourished. The 5-year-old, who was in the worst condition of the three boys, weighed 19 pounds, and his skin appeared almost translucent, with visible veins and ribs. He had a thin layer of hair covering his body, which is most commonly seen in adults with prolonged anorexia.

The 7-year-old weighed 32 pounds and the 8-year-old weighed 39.5 pounds. A physician who treated the boys said all three were emaciated, and all three were at risk of death from starvation and malnutrition. All three boys had bruising and scrapes on their bodies and were infested with lice. The 5-year-old had scabs on the backs of his knees of a type commonly seen in bedridden adults.

The McCurrys' now-13-year-old daughter was healthy at the time she and the boys were taken into emergency protective custody, and she testified that the boys -- who are nephews of her mother -- were forced to watch the family eat and were tied to their beds by both of her parents. She also said she witnessed her father spank the boys, causing bruising. The girl, and one of the boys, testified the boys were forced to stand, wearing bookbags weighted with Clorox and cat litter.

The boys are now in the care of the Department of Social Services -- with the two older boys living together. Reese said they are doing well.

"They're doing better than you'd expect," she said. "Children are so resilient."

The McCurrys didn't speak prior to sentencing, but each of their attorneys asked the judge to run the sentences concurrent with one another.

During the three-day trial, the McCurrys each blamed the other, and the boys, for the abuse. Molly McCurry said she was a victim of domestic violence. She said she had no car or phone to help her and her children get out of an abusive situation. She said her husband controlled the money and that she and the children were forced to live in poor surroundings.

Scott McCurry -- who had no criminal history of domestic violence -- claimed the long hours he worked kept him from the home, so he wasn't aware the situation had spiraled out of control. He said his wife had a drug problem and had squandered his money, and the money the boys received from the state. Scott McCurry admitted to tying the boys to their beds, but he said it was only to keep them from "acting out sexually" toward one another.

"When it came time, they threw each other under the bus," Reese said, adding that each of the adults participated in the abuse. Reese said if the neighbors hadn't become involved, the boys likely would not have lived.

Debra Justice, the boys' aunt, sat through the trial and said the family was pleased with the sentence.

"They got everything they got coming to them," she said. "It just broke my heart. I don't see how they could say those kids were normal when they looked like they looked in those pictures."

Nina West, the boys' biological mother, also observed the entire trial and said afterward that she was glad the ordeal was over for her sons. West, who was emotional after the sentencing, said she doesn't get to see her sons, but hopes they can get some sort of closure from the outcome of the trial.

The Department of Social Services took the children from West in February 2003 after a judge found that she physically neglected them and after she failed to complete a court-ordered alcohol treatment plan. West said although she hasn't seen her sons since they were taken, she still loves them and cares for their well-being.

The boys' father, Harley West, died in a bicycle accident in July 2004.
